From the Struggle for Water to the Struggle for Democracy

Congress of EYATH Union Workers: "From the Struggle for Water to the Struggle for Democracy"

The Plenary Session of the Council of State, with decisions 191/2022 and 190/2022, ruled definitively that EYATH and EYDAP must be controlled by the Greek State and not by the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations (HCAP).
To ensure substantive, not merely formal, control of these companies, the Council of State decided that the majority of shares of the two water supply companies must be removed from HCAP and transferred to the Greek State.

These rulings of the Council of State are the institutional culmination of our long struggle to prevent the privatization of Water and to ensure it remains a Public and Social Good — not a commodity for profit.

In May 2014, the citizens of Thessaloniki, in the Water Referendum, voted NO to the privatization of EYATH with the overwhelming percentage of 98.03%.
Following the will of the people, the Supreme Court confirmed what is self-evident to all of us: Water is Life, and Life is not for sale — neither directly nor indirectly.

Despite the rulings of the Council of State and the will of the citizens, the Greek government, on July 28, passed an amendment (articles 114 and 115 of Law 4964/2022) that annulled decisions 190 and 191/2022 of the Council’s Plenary Session, which explicitly state that EYDAP and EYATH must be removed from HCAP and returned to public control.

This unprecedented action violates the foundations of the Constitution, the principle of separation of powers, and raises serious concerns about the functioning of Democracy in Greece.
The anti-democratic deviation must not prevail!
